Car and cycle rental in Delhi
For local sightseeing and journeys beyond the city confines, the cheapest and most reliable oudets for chauffeur-driven cars are the tourist office, 88 Janpath, and the booths at the southern end of the Tibetan Market on janpath, most of which are willing to negotiate a price. Expect to pay from Rs500 a day which includes 80km mileage; in the high season the price rises to around Rs800 a day. Private travel agencies throughout Delhi usually charge more. If you want the option of self-drive, and don't mind paying extra to brave Delhi's notoriously dangerous roads, try Budget, G3 Arunchal Building,
Auto-rickshaws and cycle rickshaws in Delhi
Auto-rickshaws (or "autos") - scooters converted into three-wheeler taxis -can be extremely useful in Delhi's chaotic traffic, though they catch the worst of the polluting exhaust fumes since their open sides are level with larger vehicles' exhaust pipes. Autos are now, however, finding themselves in the forefront of the recent ecological drive, with most new vehicles being fitted with natural gas-powered engines instead of the old diesel ones. In theory autos should charge what's shown on the meter, but even on the rare occasions when their meters are working, the rates tend to be out of date, and liable to
Accommodation in Delhi
Delhi has a great range of accommodation, from dirt-cheap lodges to extravagant international hotels. Bookings for up market hotels can be made at the tourist desks at airports and railway stations, but budget travellers have to do their own searching. If you want to stay in comfort, try booking your ticket through the Travel Corporation of India (TCI), which offers substantial discounts on double rooms in select upmarket hotels (see p. 151)-
Arrival and information in Delhi
Delhi is India's main point of arrival for overseas visitors, and has two airports, one domestic and one international. State buses from all over the country pull into the Inter-state Bus Terminal in Old Delhi, while private buses stop in the more central location close to New Delhi railway station. Trains arrive at the railheads in Old or New Delhi, both well connected to Connaught Place, the commercial centre of the city, by rickshaw and taxi. For a summary of the kinds of accommodation available in different areas of the city, which may well determine where you head first, see p.
Accommodation for Mumbai
Even though Mumbai offers all kinds of accommodation, finding a room at the right price when you arrive can be a real problem. Budget travellers, in particular, can expect a hard time: standards at the bottom of the range are grim and room rates exorbitant. A windowiess cell with wood-partition walls and no running water costs Rs300 and above, while a comfortable room in the centre of town, with an attached toilet and shower, and a window, will set you back the best part of Rs1000. The best of the relatively inexpensive places tend to fill up by noon, which
By train in Delhi
Delhi has two major railway stations. New Delhi Station is east of Paharganj (Main Bazaar), and within walking distance of many of the area's budget hotels, though courists burdened with luggage often prefer to hail a cycle rickshaw to reach their hotel, which shouldn't cost more than Rs20 -negotiate the fare in advance. If you're heading for hotels south of the station, however, bear in mind that cycle rickshaws cannot enter Connaught Place. The station has two exits, with the Paharganj exit the more popular, useful for Connaught Place and most points smith, and the Ajmeri Gate exir more convenient
From the West Coast
From the West Coast, it takes about as long to fly east or west - a minimum of 22 hours' total travel time - and if you're booking through a consolidator there may not be much difference in price. Thai Airways, Cathay Pacific, Northwest, Malaysia Airlines and Singapore Airlines are the main carriers flying over the Pacific to India, via their respective hubs. Air India doesn't do the trans-Pacific route, but can book passengers on Northwest to any of several Asian capitals and then fly them the rest of the way. From Los Angeles or San Francisco, you're looking at a
Rishikesh and around northeast of Delhi and 24km north of Haridwar at Uttaranchal
RISHIKESH, 238km northeast of Delhi and 24km north of Haridwar, lies at the point where the wooded mountains of Garhwal rise abruptly from the low valley floor and the Ganges crashes onto the plains. The centre for all manner of New Age and Hindu activity, its many ashrams - some ascetic, some opulent - continue to draw devotees and followers of all sorts of weird, wonderful and occasionally fraudulent gurus, with the large Shivananda Ashram in particular renowned as a yoga centre. Rishikesh has one or two ancient shrines, but its main role has always been as a way-station for sannyasin,

Accommodation of Nainital in Uttaranchal
As a holiday town, Nainital is full of hotels; however, budget accommodation is hard to come by, and a hefty fifteen percent tax is levied onto prices almost everywhere. Rates are high between March and July, peaking between mid-April and mid-June, but you can normally find discounts at other cimes. On the whole, rooms are cheaper in Tallkal than in Mallital. The price codes indicated overleaf are for the low season but with an indication of the high season rates. Alka, the Mall 05942/35220. Taxis in Delhi
Black and yellow taxis, which charge around fifty percent more than auto-rickshaws - thus Red Fort to Connaught Place costs in the region of Rs80 -are considered to be the most reliable mode of transport. Drivers belong to local taxi stands, where you can make bookings and fix prices; if you flag a taxi down on the street you're letting yourself in for some hectic haggling. Between 11pm and 5am, there is a surcharge of around 25 percent. A new service. Dial-a-Cab, offers convenience and luxury with air-conditioned cars and tamper proof digital meters, but at a price.

Flights from regional airports and Ireland
No direct flights to India are available from regional British airports. From Manchester your best bet is to fly with Emirates or Gulf Air to Delhi or Mumbai via Dubai for £420-550, depending on season. You can also pick up KLM flights to India by flying first to Amsterdam; either fly KLM from Belfast, Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff or Manchester (for the same price as from London), or KLM UK from Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Humberside, Leeds/Bradford, Norwich, or Newcastle. Similarly, Air France flies to Paris from Birmingham, Bristol, Edinburgh and Glasgow; in general, both KLM and Air France beat BA by

Auto-rickshaws to New Delhi or Paharganj take about fifteen minutes {around Rs50), cycle rickshaws twice that (around Rs30). Private buses from all over India terminate outside New Delhi railway station; some will drop passengers in Connaught Place if they pass that way.
South Delhi
Most of the accommodation south of Connaught Place lies firmly in the luxury category, although there are a few guesthouses in Sundernagar, the odd mid-range hotel tucked away in a residential area and a modern youth hostel near the exclusive diplomatic enclave. The five-star hotels provide Delhi's best restaurants, bars, health centres, nightclubs and most exclusive discos. As a result, the city's high society uses them to entertain, be seen in and hold lavish weddings, cocooned from the outside world. Prices here are some of the highest m India; those in this section encompass a range from $16 to over
